The Hoofin' 4 Hardy 5K will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Birchwood Park, 435 W. Illinois Ave., Palatine. The 5K run and two-mile walk is held in memory of Palatine resident and 2006 Fremd graduate Joshua Jared Hardy.  

The BBWAA has pleasantly surprised me this week by electing deserving winners for both league's Cy Young Awards, uncharacteristically looking past relatively unimpressive win totals and awarding Zack Greinke and Tim Lincecum for their fantastic bodies of work in the '09 season. Greinke, who had a historically great season, was the clear-cut class of the AL this year, and any concerns that the voters would lean toward the gaudier win totals of less deserving candidates like Felix Hernandez, Justin Verland  

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre already has had his revenge on the Green Bay Packers by defeating them twice this season, proving they should have retained him two years ago.  

When Twins center fielder Denard Span heard the news that teammate and fellow outfielder Carlos Gomez had been traded to Milwaukee for shortstop J.J. Hardy, it was a bittersweet feeling.  

Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has made his team much better with some moves early in this off-season.  

When we ran a poll asking what you thought about the J.J. Hardy-for-Carlos Gomez trade, most of you said that you didn't like the deal because Hardy should have brought more in return, or at least a starting pitcher for next season. For the past week or so, we've heard rumors that Hardy could've netted Aaron Harang or Matt Capps if the Brewers were willing to trade within the division. Thanks to Fox Sports (with a hat tip to Tom Haudricourt), we now have an idea of what actually happened in the negotiat  

"We should get J.J. Hardy ; he's really good." 2009: "We should 'buy low' on J.J. Hardy." 2008: "We should sign Russell Branyan ; he'll be really cheap." 2009: "We should sign Russell Branyan; he's proven himself now."  

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy and catcher Jason Kendall were voted the second-best defensive players at their positions in the 2008 Fielding Bible Awards .
